On December 18th, 2021, the first and only public hospital in Lecheng —Hainan Hospital and Boao Research Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "Ruijin Hainan Hospital") of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine opened for trial operation, which was a historic moment of great significance in the reform and development process of Lecheng Pilot Zone, marking that Lecheng entered a new stage of high-quality development.

Hainan’s Boao Lecheng is the only one medical special zone in China, and an important channel for the world’s most advanced and innovative drugs and medical devices to enter the Chinese market. Ruijin Hainan Hospital is one of national and Hainan provincial key projects with 500 beds approved. The hospital is planned to become a regional medical center by working together with Hainan Provincial People's Government as the main body, Shanghai Ruijin Hospital as the service provider and Hainan General Hospital as the supporting body.

When mentioning the importance of cooperation between Hainan Province and Shanghai Ruijin Hospital to build Ruijin Hainan Hospital, Wang Lu, Vice Governor of Hainan Province, said that this is not only a major event in the development of medical and health undertakings in Hainan Province, but also a happy event that benefits the health and welfare of Hainan people. It indicates that the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port has made great achievements in the field of healthcare, and it also indicates that Shanghai and Hainan have made solid steps in exploring the deepening cooperation in the field of healthcare. It is hoped that Shanghai Ruijin Hospital will give full play to the role of "national team", lead the development of medical and health services in Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone and assist in the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port. It is also hoped that Ruijin Hainan Hospital will make full use of the “Try First” policy granted by the state to Hainan's medical and health undertakings, and the Hainan Provincial People's Government will provide comprehensive guarantee.

Gu Gang, Director of the Development and Reform Commission of Hainan Province and director of Lecheng Pilot Zone Administration, congratulated Ruijin Hainan Hospital on its opening and trial operation. He said that as the first and only well-known public medical institution in Lecheng, Ruijin Hainan Hospital's opening and trial operation marked a new stage of high-quality development for Lecheng. Today, the trial operation of Ruijin Hainan Hospital, as a pioneer in running high-level international model Chinese-foreign cooperative medical school by Haiman International Medical Center and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is of great milestone significance. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals fully support the development and construction of Ruijin Hainan Hospital.

Zhou Changqiang, Director of the Health Commission of Hainan Provine, said that Hainan provincial health Commission will go all out to support the development of Ruijin Hainan Hospital. Wang Xingpeng, Director of Shanghai Hospital Development Center, said that Shanghai Hospital Development Center, as the main body running Ruijin Hospital, would support the construction and development of Ruijin Hainan Hospital. Tian Zhiqiang, Party Secretary of Qionghai Municipal Committee of CPC, Zhao Jiannong, President of Hainan Medical University, and Jiang Hongyan, Party Secretary of Hainan General Hospital delivered live speeches, respectively. The ceremony was presided over by Li Wenxiu, deputy director of the Health Commission of Hainan Province. It is learnt that during the trial operation, Ruijin Hainan Hospital will simultaneously plan and build a national real-world clinical data research center, an advanced technology national medical research center, a national clinical medicine innovation center and an international transplant medical rehabilitation diagnosis and treatment center, and will recruit the best expert teams at home and abroad. At the trial operation ceremony, Qu Jieming, Party Secretary of Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Jiang Hongyan, Party Secretary of Hainan General Hospital jointly unveiled the opening stone of Ruijin Hospital in Boao Lecheng, Hainan, symbolizing that Shanghai Ruijin Hospital and Ruijin Hainan Hospital share the same origin and will keep pace with the times.

“A 21-member team consisting of doctors, nurses, technicians and management members have been transferred to Lecheng as the first expert team after the trial operation of Ruijin Hainan Hospital.” Gu Zhidong, Party Secretary of Ruijin Hainan Hospital, introduced that the next stage of the hospital will focus on the spectrum of diseases in Hainan Province and common diseases that need inter-provincial referral, strengthening the construction of three major disciplines, namely, tumor and hematology discipline group, cardiovascular metabolism discipline group and neurobrain science discipline group, and strive to build a regional medical center of the country.

At the ceremony, Academician Chen Xiangmei, who has devoted herself to the healthcare undertaking, was awarded as “Guangci” Professor.
