Peter J. Barnes obtained a doctor's degree in medicine from Oxford University in 1978. He is a famous British respiratory scientist and clinician, as well as an expert in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He has served as Chairman of the European Respiratory Society and Editor-in-Chief of the SCI journal Respiratory Research. He is currently the Founding Chairman and Professor of Thoracic Medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute, UK, Director of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the Imperial College of Medicine, and Honorary Consultant Physician at Royal Brompton Hospital. To date, Professor Barnes has published more than 1,000 peer-reviewed papers on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and related topics, and acted as editor of more than 40 books (H index = 153). He is also one of the top 50 most cited researchers in the world and the most cited clinical scientist in the UK, and has been the most cited respiratory researcher in the world over the past 20 years.
