A 31-year-old woman surnamed Wang, who had a IV-level articular cartilage injury in her left knee, has realized her dream of walking freely again following surgery at Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in late April.

Wang received the surgery for the repair of her articular cartilage injury using innovative articular cartilage regeneration technology at the Boao Research Hospital and the Lecheng Branch of Hainan General Hospital.

Wang's surgery was conducted by Chen Shiyi, professor and chairman of Fudan University Sports Medicine Center and distinguished professor of Hainan General Hospital, and Wang Guangji, head of the department of sports medicine from Hainan General Hospital.

ChondroFiller liquid was used in the surgery to repair the injured articular cartilage.

ChondroFiller liquid is currently the world's first injection-based collegan for artilage regeneration. It enjoys advanced technology, good biocompatibility, high security and a reliable curative effect. It gained the CE marking from the European Union (EU) in December 2013.

It requires only one minimally invasive surgical procedure and patients can walk on the second day after the surgery. It has now been widely applied in several countries, from Europe to South America.

Cartilago articularis is comprised of hyaline cartilage and doesn't contain any blood vessels or nerves, which means cartilago articularis cannot be self-repaired once injured.

Repair of articular cartilage injury has become a global medical problem and experts have been devoting continuous efforts towards finding out effective solutions to repair articular cartilage injuries. Traditional solutions such as microfracture surgery, autogenous cartilage graft and autologous chondrocyte transplantation can no longer meet with clinical demands.

The incidence rate of articular cartilage injury is now climbing. The rate for those caused by exercise is between 10 to 20 percent.
